Our goal at the Family Birth Center is to provide a memorable and fulfilling experience while welcoming your newborn.  If at any time you have any questions, our knowledgeable and caring staff will be happy to assist you.

Being a mother starts long before your baby is born.  You have many decisions to make, from your baby's name to the color to paint the nursery.  Having your baby at the EMH Family Birth Center is a decision that will guarantee you'll receive the best birthing experience and care possible.

Family Centered Care Environment...

In the Family Birth Center, experience the joy of childbirth—from labor and delivery to recovery and postpartum care—in one of 18 spacious, comfortable maternity suites.  You won't ever have to move to another location.  Each suite is decorated to look like home without sacrificing the safety of a modern hospital.  These LDRP rooms as they are called, provide a family-centered care environment where friends and family may visit.

Accommodations...

All LDRP rooms are medically equipped so you receive the most efficient care.  In addition, mothers have private rooms and baths, and six of the rooms have whirlpool tubs for hydrotherapy.  Special accommodations allow for Dad or a family member to stay with you the entire time.  Each room also has an infant area where the baby receives care and treatment following the delivery.  If a Cesarean delivery is necessary, two surgical suites are nearby with Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) on-call 24 hours a day.  The birth center also includes a Level II nursery with specially trained nurses and physicians for babies who need special care.

After the birth...

As a new mom, you are encouraged to keep your baby with you in your room; however, the newborn nursery is also available.  Keeping baby with you provides the opportunity to practice baby care with assistance from your nurse.  Dad, or your support person, is also encouraged to get involved in your newborn's care.  Lactation consultants are also available to help you with breastfeeding.

Security...

EMH has taken several steps to increase infant security within the Family Birth Center.  Through the use of a high-tech security system, OB staff will know where your baby is at all times.  Special entrances with control doors prohibit non-authorized persons from entering the unit.  Those permitted to enter must supply a special pin number and palm print identification.  Visitors may enter through the main visitor lobby, but must be granted access into the unit by EMH personnel.
